Why go
Phu Phrabat Historical Park sits in the Phu Phan hills in Ban Phue district, north-west of Udon Thani city. Wind and water have carved its sandstone into odd shapes: overhangs, shallow caves and mushroom-like pillars.
In 2024 UNESCO listed Phu Phrabat as a World Heritage Site for its Dvaravati-period tradition of placing sima (boundary) stones around rock shelters used as sacred spaces.
What to see
Hor Nang Usa
The large mushroom-shaped rock that has become the park's symbol, linked to the local legend of Nang Usa and Thao Barot.
Prehistoric rock paintings
Several shelters carry red paintings of people, animals and geometric patterns, close to the walking trails. Please don't touch them.
Sima stones around the shelters
Upright stone slabs mark out sacred areas around the rock shelters; they are the main reason for the World Heritage listing.
Getting there by rental car
From Udon Thani city, drive towards Ban Phue district: about 65 km and roughly an hour. The road is paved all the way to the park car park, so any sedan will do.
Before you go
- Wear shoes with grip; the trails go up and down over rock that gets slippery when wet.
- Bring water and a hat; the midday sun is strong.
- Leave the city early to walk before the heat.
- Check the latest opening hours and entry fee before you go.
- Refuel before returning the car (full to full).
Which car to rent
For 2–4 people, a sedan such as the Toyota Yaris Ativ or Toyota Vios is plenty. For a family or lots of luggage, a 7-seater such as the Mitsubishi Xpander is more comfortable.
